Starting your Driver Training

Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) is a program for the new drivers.  Regardless of age the GDL provides the support, skills and experience they need for learning driving. GDL helps improve road safety by creating a lower risk and a more controlled environment for all new drivers.

Calgary Driving School

The following information highlights the key ingredients of GDL:

Stage one learner (Class 7)

To obtain a Learner’s licence you must:

  • be 14 years of age or older
  • pass a vision screening and a knowledge test on the rules of the road
  • have parental consent if you are under 18 years of age
  • valid identification

 

Learner’s conditions

  • Must hold a Learner’s licence (Class 7) for at least one year.
  • Must be accompanied by a fully licensed (non-GDL probationary) driver

who is 18 years of age or older and is seated next to the driver.

  • Not permitted to drive from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Not permitted to have more passengers than seat belts.
  • They will be suspended at 8 demerit points than fully licensed drivers at 15.
  • Have a zero alcohol level.
  • If learning to drive a motorcycle, you must be 16 years of age and are not permitted to drive during nighttime hours. You must be accompanied by a fully licenced (non-GDL probationary) driver who is 18 years of age or older and is either seated on the motorcycle with you or is following you in or on another motor vehicle.

 

Stage two GDL probationary (Class 5)

To become a probationary driver you must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Pass the standard Alberta Class 5 road test.

Probationary conditions

  • Must spend a minimum of two years as a probationary driver.
  • No more passengers than seat belts.
  • They will be suspended at 8 demerit points than fully licensed drivers at 15.
  • Have a zero alcohol level.
  • No upgrading to a commercial licence (Classes 1, 2, 3 or 4).
  • Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a learner.

 

Non-probationary licence (Class 5)

To become a fully licensed driver you must:

  • Have been suspension free for the last year of the two-year probationary stage.
  • Pass an advanced road test.

 

It will take a minimum of three years to complete both the learners and probationary stages of Graduated Driver Licensing. It will take four years if you get your Learner’s licence at 14 years of age.

 

Advanced road test

Road Test

It is to be noted that all the driving road tests are conducted by the registry. Calgary driving schools are only eligible providing the theory and in-vehicles lessons only.

Anyone who is driving should carry a valid driving licence. A new driver who wants to obtain a driving licence needs to go through a driving road test. Once you feel that you have enough skills and experiences driving in different road conditions and are ready for the road test, then you must:

  • Buy a test permit from any registry agent.
  • Make an appointment for a road test through a registry agent.
  • Have a vehicle that qualifies for the licence Class you are being tested for.
  • Wear corrective lenses if required.

Road test additional information:

The examiner will check your vehicle before the test. If it is not mechanically safe, the examiner will refuse the test.

When you take the road test, you are expected to drive in a safe and reasonable manner. Only you and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle. No other passengers or pets are allowed. The only exception occurs when the examiner is accompanied by a government official in the course of being monitored.

The examiner will not ask you to do anything that is unsafe or against the law. You will only be asked to do things that are part of everyday driving in Alberta. The vehicle for your road test must be in acceptable working condition and must have the following:

  • a valid licence plate and insurance
  • headlights, brake lights and signal lights
  • horn
  • speedometer
  • brakes/park brake
  • unobstructed windshield/wipers
  • tires
  • driver and passenger doors
  • vehicle seats/seat belts
  • exhaust system/muffler
  • mirrors
  • enough fuel for a road test

The road test will assess your ability and knowledge in the following areas:

  • to identify and use the controls in the vehicle
  • operate the vehicle with skill and control
  • use of signals
  • left and right turns
  • proper use of traffic lanes
  • drive in reverse
  • right-of-way judgement: vehicle and pedestrian
  • speed management
  • parking: parallel/hill/angle
  • obey traffic control signs and signals
  • demonstrate good driving practices

Road test failures may result from:

  • lack of skill and control
  • difficulty obeying traffic laws
  • too many errors
  • traffic violation
  • unsafe action

Unless discontinued, the minimum time for a Class 5 road test is 25 minutes. Upon completion of the road test, the examiner will advise you of your errors and tell you how to correct them. Student gets a copy of the Driver Examination Checklist form, which will outline the results of your test. You can take only one road test take  per day.

Operating Your Vehicle

15 Hours Theory and 10 Hours In-vehicle: 

Basic Driving Course consists of two essential parts – 15 hours theory & 10 hours in-vehicle lessons. Theory part helps to better understand the rules and regulations. Students feel confidence while practicing on the road, if they have good understanding of the rules and regulations.

It is essential to  complete and pass the test to get the Course Completion Certificate for insurance reduction. However, one can go for the road test without doing any theory portion. Also, it is not necessary to do the theory part to start the in-vehicle lessons. You can just to the in-vehicle part, if you like.
